New England Home Show 2016 - Ova'

3/3/2016

Comments

Its official, we wrapped up our very first home show this past weekend. Overall we saw a great turn out and got to speak with many interested homeowners, business owners and developers.

What was great about exhibiting at this year's New England Home Show in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center was being able to quickly showcase our Services to those who were interested and feature our Portfolio of projects as reference.

LONG, LONG DAYS OF EXHIBITING

Given our work environment features more online collaboration through multiple consultants and designers, I wanted to best represent the company as the architect available for questions.

What surprised me a little was how "impressed" some people were that I wasn't a Sales Rep for the company in comparison to many of the other design / build firms that were present.

I had one guy come up to me and say "So your Neil? Your the guy? Hey, he's the guy!"

After a little over an hour of setup, the booth was up and running.

Based on some of what we saw with other setups and what drew interest from passersby, there is already a running list of small improvements to make for next year.

In addition to the New England Home Show in Boston, next year we'll be eyeing showcasing at the New England Home Show at Patriot's Place, Rhode Island Home Show in Providence, Rotary Home & Garden Show of Hyannis, Greater New Bedford Home Show by the Chamber of Commerce and perhaps the Worcester Home Show.

That is all based upon the success and return on this year's investment.

FRIDAY, WAS A SLOW DAY

The start to the home show was a little slow considering it was during work hours. However it gave us an opportunity to not only recover from the "tools free" setup but also to sketch some images.

I have several others I forgot to take pictures of. But my favorite was of a little boy who was with his family and wanted to see me draw. He kept asking if I could draw the Titanic and something told me he knew it for every detail so I asked the 5-6 year old if he could show me.

Sure enough he spent about 10 minutes crafting yet another drawing of the Titanic as his mother mentioned he loved planes, trains and boats. When I get the notebook scanned in I'll post his contribution to my notebook, which he signed for me 'Noah'

We proceeded to discuss how they were building the Titanic 2 to which Noah was concerned it would hit another iceberg and sink. Not only that but then they would continue to build more Titanic boats and each subsequent vessel would crash into more icebergs.

Clearly a tragedy that would only plague the existence of any boat christened Titanic.

OVERALL A GREAT TIME

I got a chance to meet many people interested in a forthcoming project (hopefully they reach out to me) and we'll see what 2016 brings 8TFive Studio.

Once again a special thanks to Chris with Stonefish Workshop for assisting with the design of our exhibit booth graphic and web banner. Find our more about the company as one of our consultants we featured in the following:

8TFive Studio Business Plan Interview

2/19/2016

Comments

For the second year we have revised and submitted our business plan executive summary to Charrette Ventures Group's 2016 Architecture Business Plan Competition.

This is a great venue to continue to develop and stay on-top of business strategies for the firm. Sort of a kick in the butt from other tasks that get put on the shelf for "when I have time".

CREATING THE MESSAGE

Revamping our 2015 business plan which focused on attempting to capture a broad spectrum of strategies and summaries ... we fine tuned the focus. The interview below provides a glimpse into why the firm was started, the issue we are attempting to resolve and how we might do so.
The video was a required 2 minute introduction of 8TFive Studio for the Charrette Ventures Group's 2016 Architecture Business Plan Competition

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EXCERPT

Our mission is to progressively enhance traditional architectural practice slow to adapt to change in technology modernization.

We intend to provide a vibrant and dynamic architectural design experience to meet and exceed the demand of a generationally-driven shift in expectations through continuous innovation, adaptable efficiency, knowledge sharing, mobile virtual collaboration and overall community betterment.
Interview for Architecture Business Plan Competition
While many architects may finally be using Building Information Modeling and think they are on the cutting-edge, we challenge the entire industry to think well beyond what might be considered an evolution in the practice of architecture.
We envision a skilled mobile workforce connected to office practices and highly capable of interacting quickly with real-time building design and analysis using evolving technologies.

SOME EMERGING TECHNOLOGY

Some technology we present briefly in the interview are augmented reality and virtual reality based:

  • AR-Media is one platform we utilize to generate and publish our 3D models which enable you to view and interact with the design in a way beyond just looking at floor plans, perspectives or videos.
  • Oculus Rift and other related viewing devices presents a new age of experiencing a virtual world. Many people see this sort of interaction as the next big step in video gaming but our question is ...

How do we take emerging technologies such as they (and others) and create an architectural office environment that will help foster the exploration, utilization and enhancement of our Services in a sustainable and efficient fashion to offer to our particular clientele.

BENEFITS OF DESIGN ANALYSIS

Last month we engage with a structural engineer from Australia through our Google+ page on how architects are using Building Information Modeling. Ultimately, we realized that showcasing some of the analysis and performance data behind the use of our designs rather than just the visualization of them would further help provide insight for potential clients.

So look for upcoming blog posts to feature more analysis oriented material to show exactly HOW we use this technology to offer clients greater depth of knowledge to ultimately make more informed design decisions early on ... saving time and cost in the long run.

If you are interested to find out what other technology we use or have our eye on moving into the future, we are more than willing to share the knowledge we've come across. Contact Us.
