I realize I haven't had a ton of time to jump online here to update the blog as there have been many aspects to our business that have started to grow. So I just wanted to take the time upon coming to a close in 2016 to reflect a little on the past year as well as mention some things that I haven't been able to cover in past posts this year.
PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
We have several residential buildings in the works including a major renovation to a home by the lake in Taunton that we're very excited about. Potentially a new home construction project in Dartmouth, MA that may come about. Another new construction house in the Dighton area and several projects working with an Architect out in the San Francisco area in California.
We've been in talks with Virginia DesRoches from a recently launched new DIY network show 'Family Builds' on several project collaborations but clients haven't proceeded forward on either our end of hers for a few of them. Although one project that was referred by Virginia was this interior renovation project for a fantastic client in Brockton, MA.
Speaking of television shows, I was approached by and in talks with a producer from the Front Page Profile series hosted by James Earl Jones to be a guest speaker on a project they're working on about innovative and emerging technology focusing on sustainability.
Yea, a little down my alley but will know more about this in the weeks to come.
THANK YOU 2016 & WELCOME 2017
To summarize since our begining 2 years ago, the business has grown 30% each year and hopefully 2017 will be no different (or better). Here is a quick look at some other projects we've completed in 2016 ranging from small additions, new construction and interior designs.
Finding the right client who understands not only the process for construction but has an appreciation for the level of detail in design to craft a fantastic house ... is - well - ideal!
The project was named by the client to represent many interesting facets that tie into the collaboration, concept and implementation of the physical structure.
Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa.
On its main island familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences.
The owner has ties and appeal to these direct cultures and styles.
The building materials will be a rustic stone, stucco and bronze palette.
Zanzibar's winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace.
The home will ultimately be the embodiment of the client's vision for the property.
During the Age of Exploration, the Portuguese Empire was the first European power to gain control of Zanzibar, and kept it for nearly 200 years.
The principal architect, Neil Silva is what do you know ... Portuguese.
After several lengthy meetings to capture as much detail and information as the client had worked out on their own, we began to put together those ideas.
This presented some design challenges to resolved and fine tune.
For the homeowner, the views from the Catwalk are important to how it overlooks the living area.
Keeping a pretty open floor plan on the first level with a very high vaulted ceiling creates a nice connection with the bedrooms upstairs or master bedroom on the main floor.
There are many stages to the design and documentation process which we've provide on-going analysis and feedback on the building's design.
We frequently get asked similar questions which we've highlighted in our FAQs.
From here we are currently in Construction Documentation working closely with our structural engineer to develop construction details and solutions to some particular issues.
8TFive Studio will also remain on-board during the entire construction process to provide Construction Administration as a means of ensuring a high level of design intent gets translated from paper to built form.
We look forward to sharing future updates once construction begins early Fall of 2016.
Excited to announce we are seeing a lot more inquiries into design and drafting Services lately. I can only assume that after about 2 years of establishment the name is finally getting out in the market as we receive many referrals from either past clients or networking events.
Some online requests have also followed from our Houzz page and Yelp as well.
Several smaller projects including a garage addition to a commercial facility in Lakeville, MA as well as potentially another in-law suite addition to a house in Bridgewater, MA.
Negotiations are also well underway for a fantastic master bathroom renovation which we are hoping to partner with Virginia DesRoches on the interior renovation.
Projects for a complete renovation in New Bedford, MA which the client was gutting the interior and flipping the interior to rent out and repair an old abandoned home is submitted for permitting.
The master bedroom / bathroom addition we designed in Newton, MA has also primarily wrapped up the latest phase of design work ended into contractor bidding for construction.
BECOMING LICENSED IN RHODE ISLAND
This latest project in Tiverton, RI has prompted the transfer of architectural licensure to the state of Rhode Island as we are actively members of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). As such, owner Neil Silva's registered architect status in Massachusetts can easily be carried over into any other state in the United States.
All be it "easy" meaning filling out paperwork and paying fees and dues, then yes "easy".
Although we at 8TFive Studio have this small blog to keep guests and followers up to date on projects, designs and events we might be participating in, we also started HomeIdeasHQ.com
The reason for such was to establish a more broad residential home ideas blog where visitors could not only get inspiration from daily but also easily reach out to design professionals.
After looking at other home idea websites, it seemed that many (some better than others) were reproduced material and/or graphic content without the expertise to back it up.
We want to give other design professionals a platform to share their knowledge!
Be it with new homes, tiny houses, modular homes or even DIY tips from professionals.
SO 8TFIVE STUDIO FOUNDED HOMEIDEASHQ.COM
It started as a part-time development. Some initial time was spent building up the platform and then publishing some content but our focus shifted away while it sat there.
However with the dawn of 2016, we wanted to revisit the user interface and move it forward.
MOST POPULAR POST - TINY HOUSES
By far our current most popular post to date has about 25,000+ views and has been shared over 400 times on social media. A growing trend of the increasing popularity of tiny houses.

We have been working with a client in Newton, MA on developing a plan to renovate their existing 3rd floor into a new master bedroom and bathroom. The challenge is that the old space upstairs is really an odd combination of low roof slopes, stairway and wall placements.
To top it off the zoning regulations will be critical in reviewing to maximize the potential square footage they are allowed based upon Floor Area Ratio and the limitations they set on a single family residence zoned not to exceed 2.5 stories.
Part of our regular Services as a licensed architect in the state of Massachusetts is to review and plan accordingly with local building departments to ensure an optimized and well thought out design for any renovation, new construction or addition.
Find other Questions to Ask when hiring an architect or design professional.
After several rounds of exploring possible options for the layout of the half story addition and renovation, we were able to identify a fantastic plan that works the best for our client.
Thrilled with the new opportunity to enhance their existing living space, the homeowners are seeking out qualified contractors in there area to undertake the job.
As part of our services, we provide 3D perspectives and quick spatial views to help visualize rooms.
Below are some images we put together for the client as well as an added level of detail for the contractors to understand the intent of the interior elevations.
Welcome to 8TFive Studio. I'm owner architect Neil Silva and you can find the latest about our company, projects and many more home ideas.
